Chapter 11: Practice
The challenge of golf is to get the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes,
not to look elegant on the driving range.
Pia Nilsson, Annika Sorenstam’s former coach.
Most golfers agree that the mental game is 90 percent of the game. And yet, when the average golfer practices, the only thing they practice is full-swing mechanics. Most golfers spend all of their practice time on 10 percent of the game. I understand that the average golfer doesn’t know any way to practice the mental game. If you read the golf magazines, you’ll see many pages devoted to swing mechanics. It’s no wonder that golfers think practicing is all about swing mechanics. Let’s talk about more efficient ways to practice to maximize the benefits of the time spent, i.e., maximize your return on your investment (ROI) of time and money.
