Chapter 15: Focus Control

Forget about that last birdie or that last bogey when you get to the next tee. Just forget it. It's gone. Play one shot.
Byron Nelson, 64 Tour wins including 5 majors, last interview at age 94, just weeks before he died.

At the 1989 Masters, Nick Faldo and Scott Hoch were in a playoff. On the 10th green, Hoch had a 2-foot putt to win and missed it. He lost the playoff to Faldo on the next hole. He later explained that he was thinking of which TV sports announcer would be interviewing him the next morning on TV instead of focusing on the putt.

We know that when we’re on the course, the best thing that we can focus on when we have a shot at hand is that particular shot and nothing else – absolutely nothing else. So anything that gets in the way of us focusing on the particular shot that we have right now will hinder our swing, get in the way of our strategy, and tend to raise our score.
