Aging
I feel sorry for Stewart Cink. He beat the best golfers
on the planet at one of the premiere events of the year but 59 year-old Tom
Watson stole the show. Watson finished second to Cink in the British Open.
What can we learn from Watson’s incredible performance at
age 59? We are all growing older. With age comes a decline in physical
ability. What can we learn from those who seem to defy that trend?
Last year at the British Open, Greg Norman, then age 53,
led by 2 strokes going into the final round. He eventually tied for third.
Let’s look at some of the factors involved in playing
well as you age.
- Diet can play a huge role in maintaining health. It just makes sense to provide high-quality fuel for your body. There are many good books on healthy eating.
- Your brain is powered by glucose – blood sugar. Glucose is mainly provided by food in the digestive tract. The liver stores enough glucose to power the body and brain for about an hour after the food is used up. When the liver reserves are used up, low blood sugar causes the body to start converting fat to glucose. Without snacking on complex carbohydrates, a golfer runs the risk of running low on brain fuel after being on the course for a few hours. That’s why you see pros snacking on the course. Tom Watson looked like he might have run low on glucose during the British Open playoff. (Dieticians advise to snack on complex carbohydrates, not high sugar content snacks.)
- Hydration. As we get older, our sense of thirst lags behind our need. After age 45 – 50, by the time we feel thirsty, we are already low on water. Dehydration leads to feeling tired and not thinking clearly. That’s why you see the pros drinking a lot of water on the course, especially during hot weather. If you’re not as sharp on the last few holes, you may be dehydrated. The only true (non-medical) test of sufficient hydration is the color of your urine. Light yellow is OK; darker yellow suggests dehydration. Women golfers are at a disadvantage here. I have heard from many who don’t drink enough water because of minimal bathroom facilities on some courses.
- Injury and Rehabilitation. Many people never regain full function of a joint after an injury. It has been shown that a large part of this restricted function has an emotional factor. There are some case reports of amazing recoveries of function after treatment with EFT tapping. See Chapter 10 in EFT and Golf: The New Mental Game Manual for the details.
- Cardiovascular conditioning. Tiger sets the standard here. If you have enough glucose and you’re well hydrated but still run out of gas on the last few holes, you probably need to increase your cardio workouts. You can start by leaving the golf cart behind. I can’t help but wonder if Watson would have won if he had prepared with more cardio workouts.
- Flexibility. Stiffness and lack of flexibility are hallmarks of aging. You must include a stretching program to maintain your flexibility. For even greater benefits, add EFT tapping to your flexibility program. See Chapter 10 in EFT and Golf for the details.
- Strength conditioning. Tiger sets the standard here also. But Gary Player was using weight training to level the playing field starting in the 1950s. Player is 5’ 7”. Yet he competed successfully with much bigger players – Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino, and Watson. Greg Norman also used weight training. At age 54, he looks as fit as he did in his prime. It is a well-known fact that we lose strength as we age. But it has been proven that most of that loss is caused by disuse, not the inevitable effects of aging. Many studies have shown that it is never too late to start a strength-training program.
- Pain. The brain will automatically protect against
pain. It will restrict movement of a painful joint, resulting in loss of
flexibility and strength. From what I have seen, the most effective safe
pain treatment is EFT tapping. Some of the cases look miraculous. See
Chapter 10 for more details.
Add EFT tapping to your conditioning program to maintain
your youthful vigor. Remember what Greg Norman and Tom Watson accomplished
in their 50s. Use it or lose it!
